Smart Savings: How Renters Can Reduce Living Expenses

At Noble Management Co we are committed to helping our tenants live well.  Times are expensive and the cost of living in California is increasing, so we're here to share ideas on how you may be able to efficiently manage some of your living expenses. Reducing monthly costs doesn't have to mean sacrificing comfort. Continue reading to find some strategies aimed at helping you enjoy a more budget-friendly lifestyle in your rental home.

Cutting Down on Utility Costs:

Be Energy Efficient

  • Lighting: Switch to LED bulbs–less watts = more savings!

  • Unplug: Devices not in use should be unplugged to avoid "phantom" energy consumption.

  • Fans, Printers, Computers and more: Opt for energy-efficient models when possible.

If you live in Orange County, you’re in luck! There are companies like OhmConnect that want to help lower your electricity bill, and may make you money doing it! To learn more about what the county has to offer in energy saving assistance, read here.

Water Conservation

  • Leaks: Address leaky faucets and toilets immediately to prevent costly water waste. Don’t hesitate to put in a maintenance request!

  • Showers: Opt for shorter showers to reduce water usage.

  • Efficiency: Only run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads.  Consider cold water washing detergents and options when washing clothes.

Heating and Cooling

  • Thermostat Management: Adjust your thermostat to eco-friendly settings when you're not home. Consider putting on a sweatshirt before adding degrees to the thermostat in winter and consider opening a window before turning on ac in warmer months.

Consider Shared Housing

Choose Compatible Roommates

  • Finding a roommate who shares your lifestyle and habits can enhance your living experience and help cover costs of both rent and bills. Clear, open communication about expectations is key.  Remember, you’ll need to check with your landlord before adding another resident!

Additional Tips for Economical Living

  • Furnish & Decorate Wisely: Seek out second-hand or budget-friendly furniture and decor items to cut initial costs without compromising style or comfort.  Second hand stores offer in person viewing or browse online sites  like Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp!

  • Understand Your Lease: Being well-informed about your lease terms can prevent unexpected fees. Always feel free to reach out to us for any clarifications or to make maintenance requests.

  • Meet your neighbors! Explore local Apps like https://nextdoor.com/ to get to know your neighbors. They often offer free goods, share harvests from the fruit and veggie gardens and share local deals.

  • Add “FREE” events and locations to help out your entertainment budget! Many localities have summer concert series, holiday celebration events (think, city sponsored easter egg hunts!)  farmers markets, regional and local parks, hiking and walking trails. Don’t forget the endless miles of public beaches!   Enjoy without much impact on your monthly budget

By implementing these strategies, you can help balance between a comfortable living environment and a manageable budget. Our team is dedicated to supporting you through every step of your rental journey.
